Cartoonist, illustrator and Panic Coordinator to Breakfast television since 1992, Paul Rainey is all this and less. Why not take a mosey around this site and experience the joy of his comic strip work? Or visit any or all of his other sites for more of the same sort of thing, which are as follows...

There's No Time Like The Present

I started work on There's no Time Like the Present, or TNTLTP for short, in September 2004. This is my long comic strip, or "graphic novel", which I am currently serialising in printed form. So far, eight parts are available and can be ordered from the shop section of the site. The first thirty seven pages of the story can be read here for free.

Book of Lists

Currently on hiatus, Book of Lists is my diary strip where events are ordered by category rather than in their linier occurrence. It ran between the start of 2003 and was paused at the end of 2006. There are over forty completed comic strip lists there for you to read.

2000 AD Prog Slog Blog

One day in 1977, I bought the first issue of 2000 AD. Thirty years later, I bought it again along with most of the following eleven hundred in a moment of madness in an eBay auction. Obviously, this would be a total waste of money if I didn't read them all. Why not record the experience of reading twenty years worth of comics in a contracted period of time, I thought. Thus was born, the 2000 AD Prog Slog Blog.

Some comic strips that I have drawn in recent years can be read here also...

Some sci-fi joke strips, just for fun.

Happy New Year

I thought I would take the start of a new year as the opportunity to regularly post something new to pbrainey again. On Monday 5th January I will post the first page to Goddard & Prisk Are Now Investigators of the Paranormal. The strip will run for six weeks with a new page appearing every Monday. So, see you then hopefully.

PJANG 2

The second issue of Rol Hirst's excellent comic PJANG, short for People Just Ain't No Good, is now available. This time, it's an issue long, single tale called 24 (Minutes) illustrated by Dave Metcalfe. If you're not buying this comic already then what's wrong with you? Copies can be ordered from Rol's website using Paypal.

Christmas 2007

Here's my card from last year. One of the secrets of comedy is timing. Another is grammatical understanding. The joke didn't really work on this first time around because I missed out a comma which, for its reappearance here, I've included.

The purpose of these cards is to thank people for buying There's No Time Like The Present. If you've never received one it's because I don't have your address, I had your address but you've moved and not updated me or you have never bought There's No Time Like The Present. If it's the first two then please feel free to contact me with your details and I will see that you're on the list for next year should I do one. (I can think of plenty of people I would have liked to have sent one to but didn't for this very reason). If you've never bought a copy of There's No Time Like The Present then go to The Shop and get one.

Finally, I left making this years card a little late which means I missed the last post for international mailing before Christmas. If you're one of TNTLTP's international customers then I apologise for this. Please don't think that I value your custom any less than those based in the UK.

Christmas 2006

Here is my card for 2006. I'm amazed to be reminded that I've been living now with the cast of There's No Time Like The Present as old men for longer than when they were young .

Christmas 2005

I've just been doing my Christmas cards for this year and thought it would be fun to post my previous efforts here over the next week or so. Here's the first one I sent out in 2005.

Part 8 Rol Out

Rol Hirst, the creator of the excellent PJANG, has included a review of There's No Time Like The Present part 8 here. Also, while I'm here, the roll out to shops continues. Copies of part 8 can now be purchased from GOSH in Central London and OK Comics in Leeds, as well as from here, of course.

Parts 1 to 7 Back in Print

Parts 1 to 7 of There's No Time Like The Present are back in print! Okay, they were never out of print, but they are now available in two versions. The first is the original "hand made" version. This is the one which I had printed then assembled, folded, stapled and trimmed myself. These can still be ordered from The Shop for £2.50 each. The other uses the sexy production methods used for Part 8. Obviously, these retail for £3.00 and, likewise, can be ordered from The Shop. For the new versions, some things needed a little adjusting. I hadn't, for example, a hi-res copy of the cover to Part 2 with the speech balloon. Part 4's cover needed re-colouring altogether. (See if you can spot the difference).

TNTLTP part 8; Good News, Bad News

I have some good news and some bad regarding part 8 of There's No Time Like The Present. The good news is I have found a printer. The bad news is that the price per issue has to go up to £3.00. The good news, however, is that the production quality has improved dramatically. The bad news, though, is I'm really going to have to work harder on my art now. The good news is I worked up the nerve to dump a logo onto the cover.

Paul Rainey 14/11/08

Another TNTLTP part 8 Update

Here's the colour version of the cover. I still haven't had the nerve  to put the logo onto it yet...nor have I found a printer for the comic...

TNTLTP part 8 Update

Here's the black and white art for what I intend to be the cover to part 8. I like it but I'm not sure where to put the logo.

There's No Time Like The Present part 8 Status Report

The good news is that I have finished drawing the content. The bad news is that my printer has effectively doubled their price and I need to find somewhere else to get the comic printed. If everything goes well, part eight should be available in a couple of weeks. Watch this space for details.

Halloween

I meant to post this sketch I did on Halloween on Friday but I forgot to, so here it is now.

Secret Sketch

I came across this doodle over the weekend that I did of Mr. Fantastic in an old sketch book a couple of years ago. I thought I would share it with you because I like it and incase that scene occurs in the the comic Secret Invasion that Marvel are currently publishing.

Value Pack Sketch 2

Here's another of my Value Pack sketches. I think I miss drawing Kelly because quite a few of them seem to feature her.

Value Pack Sketch 1

When I exhibit at shows, I usually have "value packs" of There's No Time Like The Present for sale. These are runs of issues bundled together at a slightly cheaper price than when bought individually. The packs also contain an original sketch. Most of these sketches are lost to me as they now belong to someone else, but I still have some in my possession so I thought I would make them available here over time for you to look at.

TNTLTP Part 8 Status Report

Just so you know, I am currently at the halfway point through drawing part 8 of There's No Time Like The Present. This means that the end of year publication deadline promised in part 7 is still on. In the meantime, here's a panel from part 8 carefully chosen so as not to suggest too much about the plot.

Paul Rainey 10/09/08

Out Take

You might recognise this panel from There's No Time Like The Present part 7 which I decided to redraw. Originally, I drew Beth wearing a bra despite her appearances in earlier panels suggesting that she wasn't wearing one under her dress. Just before going to print, I realised that being embarrassed at drawing bare breasts was ridiculous and redrew it. Anyway, here's the self conscious original.

Party Pieces

At last weekend’s Low Energy Day (another success), I got the following comics by Francesca Cassavetti; Stuff, Paris Break, A Very Nasty Solitary Habit and Party Pieces. Francesca’s comics, or at least these, recount stories from her life in a lively, engaging, funny, affirming and affecting way. Visit her website to see samples of her work for yourself.
