“Strangely compelling,
funny, entertaining and honest” Comics International
"The
Book Of Lists is a strange reading experience, but it works rather well.
Rainey’s confident and honest enough to not hold back the details of his
life that others may not want the world seeing and by doing so he’s
created something remarkably interesting and engrossing. But most
importantly, he’s a very funny writer who can raise a smile on a great
many of his pages."
Richard Bruton,
Forbidden Planet Blog.
"The
Book of Lists is pbrainey’s voice, and it’s a good ‘un."

There's No
Time Like The Present
I started work on
There's no Time Like the Present,
or TNTLTP for short, in September
2004. This is my long comic strip, or "graphic novel", which I am
currently serialising in printed form. So far, eleven parts are available and
can be ordered from the shop
section of the site. The first thirty seven pages of the story can be read
here for free.

"expertly
crafted dialogue", "exquisite panel layout""I honestly can't recommend it enough."
Redeye Magazine
"...a very good, very economical narrative." Dave Sim,
writer and artist of Cerebus.
Part 3:
"There’s
No Time Like The Present
could well be the Holy Grail of comics."
"...thrives on his wonderful
observation of people's thoughts, actions and interactions. An enjoyable
read." Comics International.
"Absolutely f*cking awesome!" Ilya, writer and artist of End
of the Century Club.
"It’s
wonderfully drawn. It has rich characterisation. It’s funny and has an
intriguing plot. It’s domestic and naturalistic in its style, but it also
has a surreal science fiction edge. " Darryl Cunningham
"...you can thankfully pick up
all 8 issues in comic form, something I wholeheartedly recommend you do."

2000 AD
Prog Slog Blog
One day
in 1977, I bought the first issue of
2000 AD.
Thirty years later, I bought it again along with most of the following
eleven hundred in a moment of madness in an eBay auction.
Obviously, this would be a total waste of money if I didn't read them all.
Why not record the experience of reading twenty years worth of comics in a
contracted period of time, I thought. Thus was born, the
2000 AD Prog Slog Blog.

and his Weevil 1

If you
don't know what a weevil
is, in this context at least, it's a race of aliens that live in the
sewers underneath Cardiff in the
Torchwood BBC TV show. I drew three of
these strips recently as part of a pitch to a magazine. I'll post
the other two here over the next week or two.

PJANG 4
The fourth
issue of one of my favourite comics at the moment,
PJANG has just been
released. It features three great new atmospheric and creepy strips
written by Rol Hirst
and drawn by Chris Askham,
Ryan Taylor and
Tony McGee.
Copies cost just £1.75 and can be purchased from Rol's website
here. Tell him I sent you.

TNTLTP Part 11 Update
Part 11 of
There's No Time Like The Present
is currently on it's way to the printers and should, hopefully, be
available in a couple of weeks. As a teaser, here's the coloured back page
panel for your perusal.

TNTLTP End Confirmed
For the last few weeks, I've been working on the ending to
There's No Time Like
The Present. Although I've always had a
clear idea of the overall story, I've usually written it a scene at a
time. However, because of the way it ends, I decided to write the rest of
it up until the very final panel which I finished doing yesterday. It
means I can now confirm to you that part 13 will be the last issue of the
series. I apologise if you're one of the people I told that part 12 was
definitely where it ends. My excuse is that I totally underestimated how
much plot I had left to go. Now all I have to do is draw the bastard.

Best
of 2009
The
Forbidden Planet blog has been running a
series of fun features where personalities from the British comics scene
list their picks of 2009. No, I'm not one of the contributors (which
I'm fine with, honestly) but I'm delighted to report that in today's entry
Martin Spandex Eden
includes Book of Lists
as one of his three favourite books. Also, writer
Rol Hirst
recently placed Book of Lists as his second favourite comic of 2009 which
is great as I have it on good authority he read a lot of them last year. Of course,
as we all know, Book of Lists is ahead of
its time and is so this decade.

Waterstone's Signing
After the great success
that was my
Borders signing in
October which later saw the administrators being called in and me not
being paid (so far) for the stock I sold for them, I will be appearing in
the Berkhamsted
branch of
Waterstone's this
Tuesday between 10 AM and 4 PM signing copies of
Book of Lists. I'm
hoping to sell lots of copies to panicking last minute Christmas shoppers.
I haven't been able to promote this signing at all so if you're in the
area please pop by and say hello. I will appreciate the moral support.

TNTLTP 10 Review
Richard
Bruton writes a review of
There's No Time Like The Present
part 10 for the Forbidden Planet
blog. "To be honest to
start reading this mind bending time travel saga at issue 10 would just be
foolish. However, to sit down and read the whole thing in one go, all 10
issues is definitely worthwhile – it’s a great, complicated read – mixing
equal parts time travel mystery with an emotional, sentimental tale of
older folk – completely original stuff – but not something to dip into at
this point. You really do need to get all the issues so far to really
appreciate the story." The good news for you is that all ten parts so far
are still available from The Shop.

Great Deeds Against the Dead
The second issue and
conclusion to Rob Jackson's Great Deeds
Against the Dead is now available. It's even
more creepy and surreal and good than the first issue. Copies can be
purchased from Rob via his
website.

Another Book
of Lists Review
Many thanks to
Noel Curry for pointing
me in the direction of this Book of Lists
review on
The Roomyverse. "The
Book of Lists is pbrainey’s voice, and it’s a good ‘un." There is, of
course, much more here.
Richard Bruton
also reviewed the
BASTARDS
anthology yesterday on the
Forbidden Planet Blog to
which I, along with many other from the self-press comics scene, have
contributed strips to. "A real call to arms for the UK scene, proving yet
again, that it’s as strong as ever and getting stronger every year."
Both Book of Lists and BASTARDS can be
purchased from The Shop using Paypal, or contact me
here for other methods of payment.

Thought Bubble
This
Saturday, I will be be selling copies of
Book of Lists
and There's No Time Like
The Present at my final comic
event of the year,
Thought Bubble
in Leeds. This is my first appearance at
Thought Bubble
but I have heard very good things about it. I will be sharing the table
with Martin Eden,
whose all gay superhero comic has been all over the mainstream press this
week. If you're in the Leeds area on Saturday then please pop by and say
hello. I'll be behind the large crowd of people queuing up to buy copies
of Martin's comic,
Spandex.

TNTLTP Hits 250
I
recently drew page 250 of my very long comic, or 'graphic novel',
There's No Time Like The Present,
which will appear in Part 11. Blimey! Normally, when I mention these event
pages here I like to reproduce a panel from it as a taster. However, every
panel from it is a spoiler. In fact, there are very few panels I've drawn
so far for part 11 that don't give events away in some way. So instead,
here's a panel from page 242.
PS -
Cover art and pinups are not included in the page count.
PPS - Part 11 of There's
Not Time Like The Present will be
out early 2010.

Pbrainey on the Radio
I'm on
on the radio again! This time talking to
Dickon Harris
mainly about Book of Lists
and partly about There's No
Time Like The Present. You can
listen to the show live on
Resonance 104.4 FM in London or
streamed here at 8 PM tonight. It will also be
podcasted here.

Comica Comiket
As part of this
years
Comica event at
the London ICA there is
another
Comiket small press show. It's taking place this Sunday
November 8th and I will be there trying to sell copies of
There's No Time Like The Present
and Book of Lists.
Comiket will take place in the
Theatre on the ground floor between 1 PM and 6 PM. See you there,
hopefully.

Comic Recommendations
I've
been a little remiss here recently at making you aware of comics I
like due mainly to shamelessly promoting my own work. However,
I've recently read a couple of gems that I really think you should know
about.
First
is Trouser Madness,
the current comic by my occasional event partner
Peet Clack.
This is a collection of humour strips by the mighty Mister Clack which
includes The League of
Uselessly Complicated Superheroes,
Road-Kill Recipes
and The Chronic Ills of R T
Hwaego. All
Trouser Madness
content is very funny, beautifully illustrated and comes in a
fantastically
designed package. Visit Peet's
blog for more details.

The
other comic that I wanted to mention is
Spandex
by Martin Eden.
Martin describes Spandex
as a superhero strip the likes of which you'll never have seen before and
he's right. In it he explores the sexual dynamics between the cast and introduces some of the team's main villains, including as a 50' tall
lesbian. Great strips, colourfully illustrated with some fun
Smash Hits
magazine styled extras and fantastic value
for money; what more could you want? Visit the
Spandex
blog for details.

After the MCM
Expo
Well,
that was a revelation. The
MCM Expo
took place over the weekend and I exhibited there for the first time. I
was impressed by the youthful tone of the show and amazed by the
percentage of attendees who engaged in ‘cosplay’ or, as I call it, ‘came
along in fancy dress’. Still, it made travelling across London and finding
the venue easy; I just followed the silver wigs. Both aurally and visually
the expo was loud and I still feel, over a day later, as if my brain has
been rolled flat, folded over and baked.
If
you’re unfamiliar with the
MCM Expo,
it’s a multi media entertainment event with an emphasis on anime, manga
and computer games. There was a comic village in place and it was here
that
Peet Clack,
my table buddy, and I exhibited along with many other creators.
Lots of
thanks to everyone who said hello and bought some comics from me. My
personal highlight of the weekend was meeting uncompromising cartoonist
Schmurgan Jonerhaff
for the first time. It was a genuinely moving experience.

MCM
Expo
Thanks
to everyone who attended my signing in
Borders Milton Keynes last
week and helped to make it a success, at least as far as I am concerned.
My next event is at this weekend's
London MCM Expo
where I will be exhibiting with
Trouser Madness' Peet Clack
and selling copies of
There's No Time Like The Present
and Book of Lists.
I should also have for sale,
BASTARDS,
the small press anthology put together by
Francesca Cassavetti
and featuring my strip
Goddard and Prisk
in print for the first time. This will be the first time that I am
appearing at the
MCM Expo
but I hear from my self publishing friends that it's a very worthwhile
event.

GO!
I am
the cover star of the
GO! entertainment section in
today’s
Citizen,
the newspaper Milton Keynes
residents have popped through their letterboxes every Thursday. (Although
mine often arrives on a Friday evening, sometimes on a Saturday morning
and, occasionally, not at all). This is the artwork I did for the cover.
Inside, journalist Sammy
Jones is writing a piece
promoting my
Borders signing this
Saturday. If you're a MK resident who can't wait until then to get a copy
of Book of Lists, then you can buy a copy now from the
Milton
Keynes Art Gallery,
Waterstone's
Midsummer Place, Milton Keynes or directly
from this website from The Shop.

Paul B. Rainey 08/10/09
Borders
Thanks
to everyone who made my presence at
BICS
last weekend a success for me. My next event
is this Saturday when I will be be signing copies of
Book of Lists
in the Milton Keynes
Borders store. This is the
first non-comic specific venue that I've attended to promote my work so
it's an unknown quantity to me. If you're in the area, please drop in and
say hello. They've got a good graphic novel section there, anyway. I will
be signing my comics between midday and 6 PM.

Paul B. Rainey 06/10/09
BASTARDS
BASTARDS,
British Artists Standing Tall And Reaching Distant Shores, is an anthology
put together by
Francesca Cassavetti
and Dan Lester
for this year's
Angoulême
international comic festival in France. It features the work of some of
the best artists from the British small press scene at the moment
including Francesca, Dan,
Sean Azzopardi,
Philip
Spence and many
others. My strip, Goddard
and Prisk is in print there for
the first time as well. BASTARDS should be available to buy in three
weeks time, but in the meantime, I will have an advanced copy with me at
BICS
this weekend if you're interested in having a look at it.
